Propane Gas Grills

What You Should Know About Propane Gas Grills

In this day and age, more and more people are spending large amounts of time outdoors.  Because of this, people are more inclined now to grill their meals than ever before.  Many families have made their patios and decks part of their living space. Many camping grills on the market today have lower prices than they did a few years ago.  What should you look for when buying your gas grill?

Many of the lower-priced grills have painted steel instead of stainless steel.  Some brands are starting to use stainless steel for the trim only or just for specific parts.  There are very few grills made today that are all stainless steel.  And if you are looking for a grill that costs less than $500, it will difficult to find an all stainless-steel grill in that price range.  Just because a grill has a higher price tag doesn’t guarantee better grilling in your backyard.

If a grill has a higher BTU/hr. (British Thermal Units per hour) rating, it simply means that is how much gas is used.  It is no indication of grill temperature.  So don’t be fooled into thinking that a higher number will guarantee faster heating or improved searing.

A 300-series stainless is better than a 400-series.  It is a higher grade of material and it fights corrosion better.  A good thing to take with you when shopping for a grill is a magnet.  This will help you identify grills made from lower grades.  Many grills mix stainless types.

Check out the grill cart to see if it is easy to tip over.  You certainly don’t want your brand new grill to tip over if you bump it while grilling!  The more stable the grill, the safer it is.  Look for sharp edges and corners on the cart, the firebox, and the shelves.  Also take a look at the handle.  You don’t want to get burned while cooking because the curve of the handle doesn’t allow enough space between your finger or knuckles and the grill lid.  Remember that metal handles will get hotter than wood or plastic.  If the grill has a sliding drawer for the fuel tank, this will make using and changing the tank much easier.

Remember that some flaring is normal with fatty foods.   So look for a removable grease tray or pan that can be cleaned after each grill use.  Also see how far it is from the grates to where the grease lands.  The greater the distance between the grates and where the grease lands, the fewer sustained flare-ups.

Don’t forget to look at the grates on the grill you are considering for purchase.  The thinner steel grates won’t do as good at searing as the heavier stainless-steel grates will.  Porcelain-coated and cast-iron grates work well also.

Today, many grills come with features such as side burners, rotisseries and high-quality cooking grates.  More expensive grill models come with features such as a smoker burner, a smoker box, a rotisserie spit and motor, and are made of stainless steel.  Remember that many extra accessories can be purchased to go with the grill of your choice.  Some brands are even trading traditional gas burners for high-powered infrared versions.

Remember you can find the perfect grill for you!  Grills can be purchased almost anywhere - even over the internet.  For more information about gas grills and all the different kinds check out http://www.summitcampinggear.com  Happy grilling!
